He was born in the Russian Empire. However, his 1912 US naturalisation petition, stated "Kruburg" which is likely Kluczbork, Poland, which was known as Kreuzburg around 1900. However, this is markedly different to the declaration on the 1907 passenger list that staated "Witebsk" (probably Vitebsk, Belarus).
