259 | Henry Thrale in 1777 Painting by Sir Joshua Reynolds. One of the Streatham Worthies. Hester Thrale bequeathed the portrait of her husband to her daughter Susannah Arabella Thrale, who in turn gave it to her sister Queeney. Queeney passed it to her daughter Lady William Osborne. On her death in 1892 the portrait passed to the Lansdowne family with Tulliallan Castle. During the early 20th Century the portrait was sold at Christies by the Marquis of Lansdowne. Hester Lynch Thrale wrote verses about this portrait. |

261 | Henry Thrale's memorial tablet Status: Located; This epitaph to Henry Thrale (1730 - 4/8/1781) is taken from the book Anecdotes of the late Samuel Johnson by Hester Lynch Thrale Piozzi which was first published in 1786. "The following epitaph on Mr. [Henry] Thrale, who has now a monument close by hers [Hester Maria Salusbury, Hester Thrale's mother] in Streatham Church, I have seen printed and commended in Maty's Review for April, 1784; and a friend has favoured me with the translation:- Hic conditur quod reliquum est. HENRICI THRALE Qui res seu civiles, seu domesticas, ita egit Ut vitam illi longiorem multi optarent; Ita sacras Ut quam brevem esset habiturus praescire videretur, Simplex, apertus, sibique semper similis, Nihil ostentavit aut arte fictum aut cura Elaboratum. In senatu, regi patriaeque Fideliter studuit; Vulgi obstrepentis contemptor animosus, Domi inter mille mercaturae negotia Literarum elegantiam minime neglexit. Amicis quocunque modo laborantibus, Conciliis, auctoritate, muneribus adfuit. Inter familiares, comites, convivas, hospites, Tam facili fuit morum suavitate Ut omnium animos ad se alliceret; Tam felici sermonis libertate Ut nulli adulatus, omnibus placeret. Natus 1724. Obiit 1781. Consortes tumuli habet Rodolphum patrem, strenuum fortemque virum, et Henricum filium unicum, quem spei parentum mors inopina decennem praeripuit. Ita Domus felix et opulenta, quam erexit Avus, auxitque pater, cum nepote decidit. Abi viator! Et vicibus rerum humanarum perspectis, AEternitatem cogita! Here are deposited the remains of HENRY THRALE, Who managed all his concerns in the present world, public and private, in such a manner as to leave many wishing he had continued longer in it; And all that related to a future world, as if he had been sensible how short a time he was to continue in this. Simple, open, and uniform in his manners, his conduct was without either art or affectation. In the senate steadily attentive to the true interests of his king and country, He looked down with contempt on the clamours of the multitude: Though engaged in a very extensive business, He found some time to apply to polite literature And was ever ready to assist his friends labouring under any difficulties, with his advice, his influence, and his purse. To his friends, acquaintance, and guests, he behaved with such sweetness of manners as to attach them all to his person: So happy in his conversation with them, as to please all, though he flattered none. He was born in the year 1724, and died in 1781. He was born in the year 17242, and died in 1781. In the same tomb lie interred his father, Ralph Thrale, a man of vigour and activity, And his only son Henry, who died before his father, Aged ten years. Thus a happy and opulent family, Raised by the grandfather, and augmented by the father, became extinguished with the grandson. Go, Reader! And reflecting on the vicissitudes of all human affairs, Meditate on eternity. | |||

265 | Hester and Queeney Thrale in 1777/8 by Sir Joshua Reynolds Hester Lynch Thrale and daughter Hester Maria Thrale. Painted in 1777 or 1778 by Sir Joshua Reynolds. Hester Thrale wrote to her friend Fanny Burney about the portrait [Yung 1984, p.113], complaining that "there is really no resemblance, and the character is less like my father's daughter than Pharaoh's." In the event, Mrs Thrale's portrait was not hung with the other portraits in the library, on the pretext that her husband did not like it. [Leslie and Taylor 1865, vol.2, p.313]. Hester Lynch Thrale wrote verses about this portrait. The portrait sold by Hester on 10 May 18163, bought by Samuel Boddington, merchant for £81 and 18 shillings, his sale Christie's 9 June 18664, bought by Louisa, Lady Ashburton; Mrs Hamilton McKown Twombly; her sale New York 1942; M. Knoedler and Company; bought by Lord Beaverbrook 1955, for Beaverbrook Art Gallery, Canada. |

275 | Hester Lynch Thrale by John Singleton Copley in 1778 Three quarter length seated portrait of a lady, traditionally identified as Mrs. Thrale, dressed in blue with a lace bonnet, crizzling silver tread. Painted in 1778. Oil painting on canvas 50 x 40 inches in its original gilt wood frame. Provenance: By descent in the Packe-Drury-Lowe family since at least the middle of the 19th century until acquired by Lane Fine Art. This exceptionally well-painted portrait is by the greatest American painter of the 18th century, John Singleton Copley. A Bostonian by birth, he has left us with a splendid record of revolutionary America in the years leading up to 1776. A traditionalist by nature, he found his clientele slipping away from him in New York and Boston, and decided to journey first to Italy to widen his education and thence to London, where he rapidly rose to the very first rank of London portraitists, the rival of Gainsborough, Reynolds and Lawrence. The present painting must be among his very earliest productions in England, and uses a pose which he used in both continents. The lady is "crizzling", and typifies the virtues or Labour and Economy, for the job embodied the tedious but valuable task of recovering and recycling the gold and silver thread which was used so widely in fashionable clothing at this date. The traditional identification of the sitter as "Mrs Thrale", seems improbable compared with other portraits of that sitter. |
