• Will: 1 Jun 1704; John's will is curious in that no mention is made of Thrale kin except his daughters. No knowledge can therefore be gleaned of the destinies of his brother Thomas, or sisters. He asked to be buried at St Albans Abbey. He bequeathed funds for the benefit of the Abbey, St Peter's and St Michael's, all of St Albans, the funds to be supervised by Mayor and Aldermen of St Albans. His numerous London friends are mentioned, silver spurs being a favourite legacy. Gilbert Parker was to benefit but his name was erased owing supposedly to the acrimony a few years earlier. His cousin was William Marston and friend John Gape, no doubt both of the families in St Michael's, St Albans. A most complicated sharing was devised between his wife and three daughters, which included his property at Ilford. A commission in 1708 was granted to Elizabeth Waldron, wife of Christopher Waldron, apothecary, Margaret Hyde, wife of William Hyde, and Sarah Huntman, wife of Robert Huntman. In his will (Will proved P.C.C. 1 June 1704) he left the farm; to his wife and thence to the issue of his daughters Margaret and Sarah and failing; such issue to the Rector of the Abbey Church and other Trustees in trust for the rents of the farm to be spent on the repair of the Abbey. Fairfolds, however, was to remain the possession of the descendants of John Thrale until sold to their kinsman, Thomas Thrale, in 1765.

Much of John's business was connected with overseas trade and the sea however. As a deponent in 1687 he recalls that the Earl of Monmouth, Dalby Thomas and Edmund Evans, and Nevile Pain, raised between six and seven thousand pounds to fit out a ship and search for a wreck in the West Indies. A few years earlier he had to give evidence concerning stores supplied by certain victuallers to H.M. Navy at Portsmouth.

In 1684 a purser of N.H. Ship "The Montague", one Thomas Baynham of Luton stated that he received money from John Thrale, a person belonging to the victuallers of the Navy. A bill of £94 was repudiated by Thrale.(37) A year later John complained that he had invested £50 in the forthcoming voyage to the East Indies in a ship "The Constantinople Merchant" being prepared by John Smith and had received no return.(38) Another dispute over business transactions occurred in 1697 with Dalby Thomas of London, which included various matters ranging from tickets for the Million Lottery, shares in Hampstead Waterworks, and postages from Barbados.(39) Three years later, John was sued by Thomas Robinson of London, mariner and commander of the ship "Fosdyke Yatch" when England was at war with France, and which carried a cargo of £10,000 in value. John was appointed to adjust the accounts' of the loading, but the results of his work were disputed. Attached to these records was a schedule headed "laden on board the ship called "The Prince William of Denmarke," and the merchants' marks of vintners against each barrel of wine were listed. (40)

Of rather different interest is an action of 1678.(41) Apparently, three years earlier John had deposited pictures with Mr. Thomas Coulthurst, a "picture drawer", for safe keeping in the house owned by Joseph Lavington in Blowbladder Street, London. Coulthurst had died, and Lavington would not give up the pictures because Coulthurst had been in debt to him, and John naturally claimed them, most of which had been purchased by John from Coulthurst. Amongst the pictures were portraits of Cleopatra, Berenice, Portia, Lucretia, 'with a rich gilt frame, Leada, Narcissus, being six pieces painted by Mons Phillips, an excellent artist. There was also a fruit piece by the hand of Guillman, a little piece of drollery by an excellent hand.

The Virgin Mary and the Shepherds by the like hand, one landskipp, one old head of Anthony Moores, one head with a ruffe, a piece with an ebony frame, were also included. It was indeed quite a picture gallery. Rather suspicious conduct was displayed by John when acting as executor to the will, of Samuel Parker, former Bishop of Oxford. He was sued by the Bishop's son Gilbert who complained that he became acquainted with John who professed great friendship. John then made insinuations about the virtue of Gilbert's wife and persuaded him to go to Utrecht, leaving his wife as a boarder with John. Further, John refused to render any account of the Bishop'a estate. John's motives would appear to be rather obvious, but as further answers and replications written in great detail on eight large membranes of parchment are badly stained and illegible, the final outcome cannot be reported.

In The Diary and Letters of Madame D'Arblay, Volume 1, Fanny Burney wrote…

"Lady Ladd; I ought to have begun with her. I beg her ladyship a thousand pardons–though if she knew My offence, I am sure I should not obtain one. She is own sister to Mr. Thrale.

She is a tall and stout woman, has an air of mingled dignity and haughtiness, both of which wear off in conversation. She dresses very youthful and gaily, and attends to her person with no little complacency. She appears to me uncultivated in knowledge, though an adept in the manners of the world, And all that. She chooses to be much more lively than her brother; but liveliness sits as awkwardly upon her as her pink ribbons.

In talking her over with Mrs Thrale who has a very proper regard for her, but who, I am sure, cannot be blind to her faults, she gave me another proof to those I have already of the uncontrolled freedom of speech which Dr. Johnson exercised to everybody, and which everybody receives quietly from him.

Lady Ladd has been very handsome, but is now, I think, quite ugly–at least she has the sort of face I like not. she was a little while ago dressed in so showy a manner as to attract the doctor's notice, and when he had looked at her some time, he broke out aloud into this quotation:

"With patches, paint, and jewels on, Sure Phillis is not twenty-one But if at night you Phillis see, The dame at least is forty-three!"

I don't recollect the verses exactly, but such was their purport.

"However," said Mrs. Thrale, "Lady Ladd took it very good- naturedly, and only said, 'I know enough of that forty-three?I don't desire to hear any more of it.'"

Jumping in and out of every Mortar till he was black as the ground.

.The next day he breakfasted with his father's clerks, bright as a berry. Later during the day, he suffered intense pain. A physician administered a medicine Daffy's Elixir. As he became desperately ill, his mother rushed to his bedside where he lay in agony. He spoke to his nurse and said:

Don't scream so, I know I must die.

He died between 3 and 4 p.m.

His mother slowly recovered from his sudden death, but was disappointed in the behaviour of her friend Herbert Lawrence following her son's death, leading to the ending of their friendship.

In contrast, although his father lived for a further five years after the death of his son, he never really recovered from the shock of his son's unexpected death.

Ralph died of a brain disorder that caused his head to enlarge. Doctors now think that the cause of death was either congenital hydrocephalus, where there is an increase in the fluid in the ventricles of the brain or hydranencephaly where a bag of clear fluid between the brain and skull distort the shape of the head.

During the last few months of his life, Ralph's state overshadowed the life of the Thrales taking everybody's mind off the fact that Frances Anna Thrale was born two months earlier.

Henrietta’s Death however was inevitable; She came home with a slight glandular Swelling in her Neck which was succeeded by the Measles & Hooping Cough: these united fell very heavy on an Infant so tender, & falling on her Lungs particularly, produced an Abscess which was the immediate Cause of her Death.;.

Surprisingly - by today's standards - during the period of her illness and death Hester was in Bath whilst Henrietta and Cecilia were in Streatham.

John inherited the baronetcy at his birth on the following August 1 after the death of his father (Gent. Mag. xxix. 194; lxxii. 376). He was made the ward of his uncle Henry Thrale 1724-1781 and fulfilled Dr. Johnson's worst predictions, becoming one of the notorious rakes of the Prince of Wales's circle, going through his own fortune and his mother's, which he inherited in 1802, and landing in King's Bench prison in 1813, whence Lady Keith (Queeney Thrale) tried to rescue him by appealing, in vain, to his former patron, the Prince Regent. Bowood Papers. Johnson sent the verses to Mrs. Thrale on August 8. Both the covering note and the verses are now in the Huntington Library. The verses were first published entire in Mrs. Piozzi's British Synonymy (1794) but the fourth stanza appeared in her Anecdotes (p. 281).

One of Henry Thrale?s sisters was Lady Mary Lade (1733-1802), who married Baronet Sir John Lade on 27 May 1756. They had a son, also called John who inherited his father?s fortune and Baronetcy. Sir John Lade the junior was made ward of Henry Thrale, but when freed of this he took Samuel Johnson's advice and became a notorious rake.

Buried:
Ralph Thrale died in 1852, and the villagers gave him a wonderful burial. The family brick vault was opened, but William Archer the sexton only received four shillings for taking out the earth and clearing it away. The coffin was covered by the best pall. William Paul was the undertaker. The main items of the bill were the coffin, costing seven guineas, and the hire of hearse and coach, five pounds ten shillings. Among other items, Mr. Paul provided nineteen pairs of gloves varying in price from half-a-crown to one shilling a pair, and twenty black armbands. The entire bill came to £24, which in those days would have kept a labourer's family for seven months.
