"I William Thrall of Windsor do give and bequeath my Outward Estate, my House Barn & all my Lands of one sort or other, Upland or Meadow, to my son Timothy Thrall, to be his & his heirs forever, yt with this Proviso, that upon his possession thereof he stand bound to discharge the Legacies as followeth: First: that he pay to Daughter Phillip Hosford the sum of L45, to be paid within 3 years after my decease. Second: that he pay to Samuel Cross, & also to her that was Mary Cross, both which live with me, 5 Shillings apeice. Third: That he pay to Mr. Benjamin Woodbridge 20 shillings. It is my Will & I do give to my gr. child Sarah Hosford the little House I have begun to build on John Hosford's Land. For my Household Goods, what is in the possession of my son Timothy Thrall I do bestow on him, & what part of my Household Goods is in the possession of John Shepherd I do give to my daughter Phillip Thrall. A cow of mine in John Hosford's Hands I do give to Daughter Phillip Hosford, & the Cattle or Stock in my son Timothy Thrall's Hands I give to him. I ordain my son Timothy Thrall Executor. In the Windsor Church records of this period Timothy Thrall is grouped with the men who had a family, a horse and two yokes of oxen, so it would appear that he was a better businessman than his brother-in-law, John Hosford Hosford, however, is on two military lists. First on a list dated 11 March 1658 of 37 Windsor men in the first horse troops (30 horse) in the colony. Second, he was paid 6s 8d for fighting in King Philip's War.

Both men protested the town vote to invite Mr. Chauncy to replace the aging Rev. Wareham as minister of the Windsor Church in 1662. When the 54 dissenting members were allowed to form their own church, the brothers-in-law went with them and became leaders of the Second Church. This new congregation were more Presbyterian than Congregational, and opposed to Chauncy's ideas. This sort of schism was occuring throughout all the New England colonies and therefore the Windsor dissenters, when they appealed to the Colonial Council, were less harshly treated than they might have been. In the end, after years of wrangling, which split the town, the two Windsor Churches reunited The first overtures were made by the Second Church, who sent John Hosford, Timothy Thrall and Jacob Gibbs to negotiate.

Timothy Thrall was a land-owner. He had his own place, or did soon after his marriage in 1659. His father-in-law, Thomas Gunn, gave him the original Gunn homestead and lot, as well as Gunn's land on the other side of the River. Timothy moved to a new house and again he was a leader in the forming of a new Church. Timothy was, we assume, honest and able, as he was named as executor in several wills.

Deborah Gunn is mentioned in Old Windsor records. Her father moved in 1665, to Westfield, Mass. and became active in the Westfield Parish, leaving all his Windsor property to his son-in-law.

Mindwell Moses Thrall was the daughter of John and Mary (Brown) Moses. John and Mindwell had eight sons and a daughter. Most of the young men had some military service and John I was called "Sgt. John" apparently to distinguish between his first son, John, as they both lived all their lives in the same community. Sgt. John moved out to that part of Windsor called the Turkey Hills (Now East Granby) to clear land for himself and his boys. All of his children were born in Windsor, Connecticut.

Walter G Thralls 1862 Genealogy books says "They had nine children: John 2d, Moses, Aaron, Amy, Joseph, David, Joel, Charles and Jerusha"

The Thrall Genealogy 1605-1965 by Stephen D Thrall says ... "Lt. WILLIAM THIULL was apparently a rather colorful character and popular as a young man, as he was elected Lt. of the Trained Band, and later elected Captain of Windsor Trained Band, but not approved by Legislature. He was in debit, and jailed for it in a neighboring town. Members of the Trained Band released him from jail. Everyone heard of the escapade and Legislature felt that a person with so much military pwoer should not disregard law so freely. Evidently he was not a good financier. He borrowed from one to pay another until the old court record would make it appear he was a daily visitor. His death at the age of 38 was inexplicable, as most Thrall's are long-lived. No knowledge of how or where he died. He was in great financial trouble at the time. His will was not settled for several years, as there was a suspician that perhaps he was not dead but had gone to some other part of the country."

"In July, 1737, Lt. William Thrall made & proposal to build a bridge 'across the Rivulet at the ferry' and & committee was chosen to consider the matter. The Lieutenant was somewhat ahead of his more conservative neighbors, as we find no further mention of a bridge until April, 1745 (Lt. Wn. Thrall died in 1738 at the age of 38) at which time a town meeting was warned to consider 'about the Rivulet ferry' and 'about a bridge there.' The latter was again negatived. In April, 1748, however, the subject again came before the town meeting and it was then agreed that any person or persons might have liberty to build a bridge, provided they did so at their own expense and made it a free bridge, forever. Said persons were to leave their names with the Town Clerk within one year from date. In December following, Peletiah Allyn, Daniel Bissell, Isaac Burr, and sundry others, announced to the Town Clerk their intention of -accepting this extremely liberal offer. Accordingly, in 1749 they erected a good cart bridge, the first ever erected across the Tunxis, and made it free. In 1759 it needed repairs or rebuilding, but the town voted "not to build or repair." Whereupon (December 1759) the original builders of the bridge petitioned the Assembly that they 'would order the Town of Windsor to rebuild or make such repairs as were necessary.' The Assembly did so order (May 1760) but the refactory and illiberal town merely contented themselves with making a few slight and temporary repairs, and thus the matter rested until 1762, when the necessity of a good, new and substantial bridge became too imperious to be any longer evaded. In 1762 they finally received permission from the Assembly at Hartford to run a lottery to pay for the bridge, which they did, in October 1762. Unfortunately, five years later, a flood washed the bridge away, so that it had to be rebuilt."

Two of John Thrall's sons died in infancy, but of the four sons who lived and had families of their own, all four took an active part in the revolutionary war. The farm was in the Turkey Hills section of Windsor, Conn, (Now East Granby). John Thrall's II gravestone is still standing and in very good condition. It is a red stone, possibly sandstone, about four and a half feet high and about two and a half feet wide. It is one of the few gravestones in the East Granby cemetery bearing a seventeenth century date, as it shows his birth, as Oct. 13, 1699. He died at sixty-three years of age. His wife outlived him by seven years. She was seventy when she died.

Walter G Thrall's 1862 Genealogy book says ... "Samuel 1st (the writerÂ’s grandfather) was a farmer, active vigorous and industrious. He was an officer in the English service in the French war of 1762 and a Captain in the American service in the war of the Revolution. Before the Revolution he removed from Windsor to Granville, Massachusetts. He sympathized with the malcontent Shays, in 1784, and suffered considerably thereby. In 1788 he was a member of the Legislature of Massachusetts.

In 1790 he removed to Rutland, Vermont. All his sons and daughters moved there about the same time, except Samuel, Jr., Lucy and Worthy. Samuel 1st had the reputation of a sensible honest man, and exercised considerable influence in society. He was about 5 feet 9 inches in height and weighed about 150 pounds, which was lighter than the average of his brothers or children. He was many years a consistent member of the Congregational Church in West Rutland. He died December 3, 1821 aged 84 years and 5 months. He was the last survivor of his generation.

In the year 1820 he had six living sons and daughters, sixty-two living grand children, twenty-eight great grand children, and several of the fifth generation.

D Stephen Thrall's Genealogy of the Thrall's says on page 23 ...

"As the Winchell family were near neighbours and good friends of the Thrall family, Samuel Thrall and his older sister both maried Winchells. Samuel was a good student, and he was given jobs that required a knowledge of bookkeeping and record keeping, and as he moved from Windsor to Granville, Mass, and then to Rutland, Vermont, he told his children about their forebears. He moved to Granville, Massachusetts and reared his family there. The country was hilly but he had a farm in Granville, and moved from there to Vermont in 1790. samuel Thrall served in the Colonial Army and held a commission in the English troops in the French War of 1762. When the Revolution came he was 39 years old and he enlisted in the Colonial Army. He was a Supply Officer in the Massachusetts Militia at Ticonderoga and several other campaigns. In the last year of the Revolution, he was Captain of a Company of Militia that marched into the Mohawk Valley to stop an English or Indain attack. His son Jesse, served the same Company. After the war, Samuel Thrall returned to Granville, Mass, and in 1788-89 was a member of the General Court at Boston. He had sympathised with the leaders of Says' Rebellion, however, on the currency situation, and as a result suffered much criticism, and his property was threatened. In 1790 at the age of 53, he moved to Vermont with most of his children and most of his worldly goods. For thirty years he was a much revered citizen of Rutland. His property was in what is now West Rutland, and marble quarries are near the old Thrall homestead. Samuel is buried in the old west Rutland Cemetary and a marble marker tells of his Revolutionary activites. His wife lucy, and son Chauncey Thrall are buried nearby. Samuel was five feet nine inches tall and weighed a little over 160 pounds. He remained in sound health until shortly before he died at the age of 84."

Pardon Thrall resided in his father's homestead for some years the sold his household goods at auction. When the sale closed, he took a bottle, stood on the bench and said "This is the last drink I shall take among you, remember this is the old Pardon Thrall place." Arron Griswold, served in the Revolution from May 11- Dec.15, 1775 as a private in Captain Ephraim Manning's 7th Co. General Putnam's 3rd CT. Regiment; and again from May 26, 1777- Jan 9, 1778 under Captian Catlin as a sergeant. Arron born Windsor, Ct. Oct.23,1743. His wife was Polly whose parentage is unknown. They first settled in Colebrook, CT about 1768. He sold his property there in 1788 and moved to Caughnawaga (Johnstown) NY.

Census:
The 1790 census of New York list him with a wife, four sons and three daughters. The name of only one daughter has been found. The name was spelled Aaron Griswell. Montgomery County, Caughnawaga Town. Two white males above 16 years of age including head of families. Three white males under 16 years of age. Four white females including heads of families.
