there were no children, much of his estate going to his nephew William Raymond of Potters Heath. (18) Anne Thrale, and it is important to note that she was then of Childwickbury, had married William Norman at Sandridge in 1753. He was obviously devoted to his wife's family as shown by his will of 1782, (19) being described as carpenter of Tokenhouse Yard, St. Margaret Lothbury, London. He had held three leaseholds in Great Bell Alley, London. From his brother-in-law John Thrale inherited mourning rings which Norman had for his 'late brother Thomas Thrale'. Ralph Thrale and his wife Elizabeth, received a stone mourning ring which brother-in-law Norman had for Ralph's father Richard Thrale, late of Sandridge, farmer. Rings also went to his nephew Thomas Thrale. Norman also mentions his late wife Ann buried at Sandridge, where he was also laid to rest. It will be recalled that it was also William Norman who erected the tomb just described. His devotion to the family appears profound, and it is not unlikely that it was William's surname which influenced the choice of Christian names for Ralph Norman Thrale in 1803. The Gentleman's Magazine tells us that he died at Ramsgate, although he was buried alongside his wife's family at Sandridge. Thomas Thrale had been very successful, not only in terms of afflu-ence, but the family around him appeared very united. He had made a very notable marriage in 1761 as far as the exercise of genealogy is concerned, for it was then that he married Anne Parsons, member of that prolific Sandridge family. Five children were born to them and a few months after Thomas's death in 1774 Anne married Ralph Thrale of No Mans Land, the son of this marriage being Ralph Thrale who was born in 1778. Thus the branches linked up after seven generations; Thomas's son Ralph was therefore (half) brother to Ralph Thrale of No Mans Land. By his will in 1774. (20) Thomas left to his eldest son Thomas both of his farms, that of Fairfolds and Sandridge Street or Pound Farm as it was becoming called. Ralph was to inherit the cottage in Sandridge Street which one knows to have been called at one time Goldsmiths, and in which at that time a shoemaker called Thomas Robinson was living. Trustees were appointed to look after the minors in the family. Ralph received further to this £950 and his three sisters Mary, Ann and Susannah £500 each when 21: these legacies were later reduced by codicil however for some unknown reason. Thomas's brothers and brother-in-law also benefited under the will. The family unity of the previous two generations was not to be maintained however, for more squabbles were to arise reminiscent of the
