at his death. (27) It could be fairly supposed that Sarah had died earlier at Luton, and Thomas had returned to his native village with his children. Thus it is found that in 1841 young Thomas Thrale who was then 15 was living at Gustard Wood. In Wheathampstead village his two brothers William aged 12, and Norman aged 10, were living with their grandmother Abigail, the unfortunate woman then being 70 years of age. (28 ) Poor woman, a difficult husband, early widowhood, and then her grandchildren orphaned at an early age - no wonder her temper was vile; she was renowned for her sharp tongue. This household of three lived in Wheathampstead, their cottage being just in front of St. Helen's Church, the owner of which was George Wright, the tithe map of 1842 also shows Abigail to be owner of a cottage in the Lower Luton Road and of the adjacent Ribbon Hall Field. Ten years later Thomas had married, become a baker and lived at the Boot in Wheathampstead with his wife and two first born children at that time very young. He had married Elizabeth Peacock in 1848 at St. Lukes, Middx, and in 1841 James Peacock, a relative of his wife's, was living with them at the Boot. The second brother William had also become a baker and lived in Wheathampstead; the third Norman, lived at the Cross Keys, with his uncle John Sibley, and although only 19 had become a miller, like his father. Thus lived the three brothers, Thomas, William and Norman in Wheathampstead. Thomas's son William married Sophie McCulloch in 1874 at St. Mary Magdalen, Bermondsey, and it is from this union that all the present members of the Thrale family who live in Wheathampstead and Luton are descended. William and his family were renowned for their sporting feats at all local contests. One son Thomas married his cousin Norman's wife, Hannah, after Norman's death in 1909; he had been a member of the old Straits Settlements Police Force and upon his return home married Hannah Thrale in 1912, dying in 1928 at St. Albans. There are in existence some portraits of this family. One shows Thomas who died in 1880, painted on glass, and the other on canvas of his daughter Harriet Abigail Thrale. The latter, baptised in Wheathampstead Church in 1857 married firstly a Mr. Hodson, and then a Mr. Trustram. The descendents of this first union, the Kerrison family, possessed these paintings and a very fine watch beautifully inscribed "Ralph Thrale". The watch is a collectors' piece. Which Ralph was the owner cannot be ascertained. The youngest of the three brothers was Norman. This branch of the family were in close contact with their kinsmen at No Mans Land and it
