is likely that the choice of Christian names for Norman was influenced by this connection. In 1864 he married Caroline Welch, whose father was George Welch, a corn factor in Wheathampstead, Caroline being born at Codicote in 1842. Norman was the last miller of three generations, his father Thomas and grandfather Ralph having been of the same calling. For a time Norman kept Kimpton Mill for his father-in-law. Later he went to Hertford Mill which was burnt down. Thus several of his children were born at Hertford, Caroline dying there in 1884. Upon his return to his native village of Wheathampstead he worked principally at the Wheathampstead Mill of the Titmuss family. He was considered one of the best - and even by that time - very rarely found - stone dressers of the old grinding stones. One had to crawl between the round stone grinding slabs and then chip away new channels in the stone. The whole of one of Norman's hands was completely black, caused by the penetration of thousands of steel and stone chippings into the skin. It was in 1932 that the water wheel of Wheathampstead Mill stopped turning after nearly a thousand years of flour milling. Wheathampstead is traditionally "the home of the wheat' and Bury Farm holds the somewhat hazy repute of being the first place in England where wheat was cultivated. Mentioned in Domesday Book, the Mill's history goes back to 1020, and probably further. Belonging at one time to the Abbots of Westminster, the Mill had the reputation of grinding flour for bread to be eaten by the English Royal family of the period. George Titmuss became owner of the Mill about 1870 and was succeeded by his son Jim Titmuss. About 1900 the Titmuss family bought Batford Mill and transferred the grinding of wheat to Batford from Wheathampstead. From then to the time of its closure Wheathampstead was to be a grist mill for cattle feed. The remaining brother William appears to have been very prosperous, mainly perhaps through his marriage with Sarah Sibley. It will be noted that William's aunt Mary had married John Sibley, so the two families were closely interlinked. Sarah died in 1869. Her will mentions the Ivorys, who were relatives, the Wilshires (William's aunt Sarah having married John Wilshire) and left legacies to her two brothers-in-law Thomas and Norman. The executors were William Thrale and William Smith, a farmer at Kimpton. (29) A year later the valuable estate known as the Maltings Farm, Wheathampstead, was offered for sale at auction at the Swan Inn in the village by order of Sarah's executors. The estate comprised the 'genteel residence, ten-quarter malting, 71 acres of very superior land, and 14 cottages and gardens'. Lot 1 fetched
