lay sick, straw was scattered over the road to deaden the noise. There was also so much dust during the summer that water carts had to be continually used to dampen the road surface. During the summer, many a circus was held on Cock Meadow in the Hatfield Road opposite Sarah's almhouses, and processions with gaudy floats made a tour of the City. Skating took place during the winters at Worley's being two long ponds on the Sopwell Estate near to the mill. An essential of life were the tallow dips made by the tallow chandler at the top of George Street, the greasy smell made by the cotton wicks being particularly obnoxious. The scent of malt was strong; Adey & White's Brewery was situated in Chequer Street, and Bingham's in Branch Road. The City was developing towards Marshalswick Park, St. Peters Park and Sandpit Lane being built upon. One of the present-day Thrales resides in the old St. Peters Park. The houses immediately to the north of Sandpit Lane were specificaly built to house servants to the large houses in St. Peters Park. Wages were ten shillings a month, and the servants had to provide their own uniform. Now the old large houses are disappearing to be replaced by flat units of a high density, whilst the former servants' houses are becoming more and more sought after.
