be built on the new Civic Centre. Shortly after the Thrales purchased the freehold of this property from Lord Brocket, and in 1968 completely reorganised by selling the frontage, and adding further additions including sole entry from the new Civic Centre. The old company was liquidated, and the Firm of Thrale Partners formed. Ralph Thrale married Gwen Randall in 1931 and their daughter Jennifer, who physically is uncannily like her grandmother Hannah, married in 1961 at St. Albans Abbey, Captain David Milton of the Royal Corps of Signals. They have two sons, Christopher and Hugh. Ralph's son Jeremy works at the British Museum. In 1926 William Thrale married Vera Phillipson, and their eldest son John, after service in the R.A.F., and after training as a horticulturist at Oaklands, St. Albans, became a nurseryman at Meadowcroft, New House Park, where the Aylward family once farmed and held their illicit Non-Confirmist meetings. Upon selling the nursery for building land, however, John entered the partnership and with his father manages the bakery and retail shops of the business. In 1958 John married Jill Nicholls, and they have a son Andrew and daughter Sally. Richard, like his brother John, attended St. Albans School. After Army National Service, he trained at the Ecole Hotelière Lausanne, and entered the restaurant section of the family business. Thrale Partners therefore comprise William, Ralph, John and Richard Thrale. In 1958 Richard married Odile Hoechstetter in Paris, and has a great deal of interest in and love for France as well as for his native Hertfordshire. One of his most precious possessions is a dreamy old farmhouse in the Dordogne called by the family Mombrial which he purchased in 1964. There with Odile and his children Christopher, Lynn and Gregory, he finds each year a period of peace and contentment, providing a temporary escape from the ever accelerating pace and ever increasing complexity of modern English urban life. The old farmhouses in which the Thrales lived, and the land on. which they worked, are steadily disappearing as demands for more and more housing have to be met. Much of the rural heritage remains however, inspite of increasing threats from pollution of several types, one of the most serious in Hertfordshire being caused by the noise of aircraft activity at Luton Airport, which with other problems will erode the quality of life for the generations to come unless promptly controlled. The modern grant of Arms to the St. Albans family links together various parts of this chronicle. The paly of ten or and gules is of the course the same as blazoned on the Arms of John Thrale in St. Albans Abbey
