consideration was given as to who should live at Sandridgebury.8 This will with that of his wife Elizabeth six years later9 provides a roll of the same relatives as mentioned by other Thrales of this generation, with the addition of the Sherwood family. Helen Thrale received white cloath at the fullers coups in St. Albans to make her coats about viij yards'. Other legacies included the cupboard in the hall, the best brass pot, three silver spoons, silver engraven pot, silver spoon with a lion on the top, the best red cow, a gown, a great platter, a ewe, two stone of wool, the least chest, bushel of wheat, and a latten candlestick. Their son Thomas Thrale of the Street had five daughters, and predeceased his father in 1600.10 Brother Alban died in 1633, occupying Hammonds Farm after the death of brother John. Sisters, Joan, Alice and Elizabeth married into the families already mentioned. Brother Ralph of No Mans Land will commence another chapter of this chronicle but this narrative will continue on at this point with the story of the elder children of John of who died in 1607, and neglect at this stage his son Richard who took over Sandridgebury from his uncle Ralph of No Mans Land.

John Thrale of Hammonds in leaving a will to be proved in 1607 left a valuable genealogical record, but a complete lack of domestic detail.11 His son Thomas continued to farm Hammonds and his son after him likewise. William Thrale was a guardian signing the 1630 register of Sandridge under this designation. Another son Alban died without issue and daughter Mary had married yet another Grunwyn. The remaining son John married Sarah Jaques, member of a well-known local family, and one wonders if there is any connection with the family involved with the mortgage of Thrales End. Also one wonders whether John was the innholder of St. Albans who sued Richard Maytham about 1630 after the latter had come to St. Albans in difficulties and worked for John Thrale for two years.12 Sarah's sister, Elizabeth Turner, had lived at Astwick Manor, near Hatfield, held some years earlier by Ralph Thrale of Nomansland, and when his part of the story comes to be told, the holding of Astwick will be more fully described. Elizabeth Turner left money to the poor of Sandridge, and Hatfield, and to many Thrale kinsmen including Richard Thrale son of her brother-in-law John Thrale, and also mentions Mary his sister, wife of Ownslow Teddar.13 This is confirmed by a draft court roll of 1644 saying Elizabeth Turner, widow, had died leaving a messuage in Sandridge Street and other property within the manor of Sandridge to her kinsmen Richard Thrale, son of John Thrale, or by default to Mary his sister, now wife of Ownslow
