for half a century longer, until it returned to the Thrale family by the surrender in 1765 of Fairfolds by Thrale Waldron and Sarah Palmer (Sarah Huntman having married the Reverend Richard Palmer in 1759) to Thomas Thrale of Sandridge, a later kinsman of John Thrale, and whose whose story is yet to be told.

The monument in the Abbey has often caused speculation. The Rev. J.B. Blakeway who diet in 1826, contributed a note to Malone's edition of Boswell, and visited the Abbey when attempting to trace the connection the St. Albans family with that of Streatham Park. 'The Clerk of St. Albans, a very aged man, pointed out the monument as an indication of the 'considerableness' of the family.48 One can see the Reverend gentleman in this ancient building which was crumbling and mouldering into a sad decay, searching for knowledge to be denied him. One wishes he could have been furnished with the information about the family, and also been told that the decay of the Abbey was to be arrested by a very thorough, even if questionable in style, restoration by Lord Grimthorpe.

Thus the story of John comes to its close - might well the cherubs on his marble monument weep large tears.
