Ralph's wife Abigail whom he had married at St. Michaels in 1684 belonged to the Andrews family; her sister Elizabeth Andrews had married Thomas Thrale in 1688, she being a sister also of John Andrews, aged twenty three and Thomas Thrale being an orphan of twenty two, both of Sandridge.12 Abigail received a third of the household goods. His son Ralph was to receive the remainder of the estate. It was in 1694 that Ralph Ewer of St. James, Clerkenwell, left messuages in Abbots Langley and £100 to his cousin Ralph Thrale, and also a small legacy to his father Ralph.13 The Ewers were well-known in Hertfordshire, for besides the Ewers who partnered the Lomaxes, there was a strong family unit at St. Michaels, much property in the Sally Path of St. Michaels passing hands through the last half of the sixteenth century involving the Ewer family.14 This legacy left by Ralph Thrale caused subsequent trouble. In 1717 John Smith of Abbots Langley complained that he had leased a house to Ralph Ewer in 1696. He had paid Ewer £10 and a bond for a further £10 to obtain permission from the Lord of the Manor to make the transfer, but the lease had not been conveyed and a few months later Ralph Ewer 'made away with himself'.
