dying whilst their children were so young seems almost like a curse placed upon the No Mans Land line. His widow Ann and brother William of Chiswick were asked to carry on the farming of No Mans Land until his son was of age. Should Ralph the younger die Ann was to receive all the furniture in the best chamber called the Blew room and also £125 three per cent reduced Bank Annuities now standing in our names in the Books of the Bank of England. (33) It might be appropriate at this point to relate of the work undertaken by the Thrale family during this period, in giving service to St. Leonards and to Sandridge. Although some were Dissenters, the Thrale family as an example of their fidelity to their church and parish filled, between 1677 and 1860 one hundred and sixty-six positions as churchwardens, stonewardens, overseers, observers of poor names, and constables. In the Sandridge Parish Officers Register owned by the descendents of the Mardall family one can see the first fly leaf inscription 'Thomas Thrale, his book 1687'. There it can be readily seen that the Thrales farmed every farm in the parish - The Street - No Mans Land - Hammonds - The White House - Tower Hill - Pound Farm - Upper and Lower Beechhide - Fairfolds - Marshalswick - Greens. The children of unmarried mothers were liable to be a charge on the poor rates, so steps were taken to prevent this when possible and make the father pay up or marry the girl, if he was not already married. Jeremiah Lattimore, the village wheelwright and a married man, was made to sign the following document written out for him by someone whose spelling was not his strong point: 'were as I have Own'd this day att a Vestre held for ye relief of ye said poor of our said Parish of Sandridge, Dew own, and Confess, that my servant Mary Gardener is at this present instant with Child by me, I therefore for a satisfaciton to ye Perrishoners att this Vestre and for ye affectons that I bear for ye said Mary Gardener, Dew promise for to indemnifie ye said Perrishoners from all cost and damdiges that may or shall arise, from ye said Mary Gardener or ye child which shall or may be from her body. As Witness by Hand Jeremiah Lattimore. Signed in ye Presence of Benj.Preedy. Ralph Thrale'. This statement was signed in 1749; a similar case is recorded a century earlier. The following year Mr. John Thrale of Hammonds Farm was one of the overseers and had to deal with another case. A certain Mary Prentice was in trouble on account of a Sandridge bachelor called Stokes, and every month from
