Ralph Thrale was also given a very fine funeral, the undertaker being one of the Paul family. The first William Paul was the village carpenter, as were his descendents after him. It was he who repaired the roof of St. Leonards in 1788. The third William had a family of eight and were the terror of Sandridge. One child, Captain, went to St. Albans School. The family were known as
Captain and Carry,
Phil, Pete and Harry,
Ann Selina, Eugena,
And little Shallot.
Interesting names! And apparently Ann Selina was the worst! Mr. Paul the undertaker buried Ralph Thrale in the manner of the following account: (39)
