at Hoo Hall. Benjamin was therefore met on his way home by relatives and a servant from Hoo Hall called Shock North, armed with a fowling piece kept above the kitchen fireplace. Benjamin's brother Robert had gone on ahead, and the party hurried after him, and found him being attacked by Clibbon and his two sons. A general battle ensued - at one point Benjamin was on the ground and Clibbon kneeling above him, and was in the act of opening a clasp knife. Benjamin shouted 'Shoot, Shock, shoot, or I'm a dead man'. Shock discharged the gun into Clibbon's chest and killed him. One of Clibbon's sons Joseph was later apprehended, the other disappearing, the former being executed on gallows on the Stanstead Road, Hertford. Walter Clibbon's body had been immediately brought to the Horn Inn at Bull's Green, where there was a drunken frolic to celebrate the bringing-to justice of the highwayman. That night there was a hard frost, and the corpse was frozen stiff. At one point the villagers, on pulling it around with a rope, brought the body upright, making it look quite life-like. They buried Clibbon at the spot where he was shot with a stake driven through his body so that his ghost would not walk. Much knowledge is known of the relics of this encounter. One concerns the clasp knife. When the hole for a new post was being dug later, pieces of the handle of a clasp knife were found. Much of these details were provided by the renowned Farmer Carrington's contemporary diary (43) Such is the official account of this incident. The Rev. Dr. Griffith about 1880, was told this story by William Thrale and wrote it down whilst William actually spoke. 'One Clibbons, a cakeman, a powerful tall man used to frequent the market rooms in the public houses of Hertford. He would notice which farmer took money of the Mills in the room for their wheat and would then waylay them and rob them on their way home. One night he attacked Whittenbury as he was going home by the side of one of the woods near Bull's Green and Datchworth. Whittenbury then hurried home and called up Shock his tasker and bid him follow him with a gun and when he came to where Clibbons was still waiting for more passengers, Clibbons attacked Whittenbury again, thinking it was a fresh man and got him down and was still with THIS knife threatening to cut his throat. Whittenbury shouted 'Shoot, Shock, shoot'! The tasker shot Clibbons dead on Whittenbury. The corpse was taken into a stable that night. In the morning they put a rope around his neck and with a horn drew him out. His feet caught the sill of the door and he was drawn to stand upright and fell over the sill on his face. He was buried in the road nearby, and
