CHAPTER V
The Golden Era
It is now necessary to return in time to the seventeenth century in Sandridge, and take on the chronicle from the point where Richard Thrale had taken over the holding of Sandridgebury, from his uncle Ralph Thrale who had died in 1648. Richard's son can be considered the founder of the Marshalswick branch from which stems the present family living at St. Albans and the Streatham family, renowned in the English speaking world for its Boswellian and Johnsonian connections. It is therefore the intention at this point to describe the descent and story of the Streatham family and in doing so illustrate the connection of that imposing family with their more humble cousins at Marshalswick. Richard Thrale was born at Sandridge in 1586, one of the younger sons of John Thrale of Hammonds, from whom he inherited twenty pounds. It is not known at what time Richard commenced his holding of Sandridgebury but his servant Richard Bains died there in 1624 (1) It was in 1636 that John Marston of St. Michaels sold to him the £12 part of the tithe called the Sheaf and tithe on hay on Twenty Acre Field, Ten Acre Field, Stable Close, Stable Croft, and Nicholas Close, all in St. Albans and as occupied by himself. (2) He had one son only Richard, who was baptised in 1617 'son of Richard Thrale and Elen' (3) Two years before he died, Richard, when aged 70 had to give evidence in a dispute between Thomas Hutchinson and the then Lords of the Manor, the Jennings family. (4) He stated that he knew all the parties concerned, and also the farm called Berristead of Sandridge which was in his occupation being leased from Sir John Jennings by a deed dated 20th May 1637. Richard had paid rent to Sir John during the latter's lifetime and then to his mother until 1646, and then to Thomas Hutchinson until 1650. In 1659 Richard died, and by his will (5) he left the poor of the parish twenty shillings. His wife Helen received 'a standing bedstead with the furniture thereto belonging in the little chamber and one joined chest in the same and one other chest in the middle chamber above stairs and two chairs, two cushions, one great brass kettle, and a third part of all the pewter and all the sheets except ten pairs'. His son Richard Thrale, since deceased, was to receive all that piece of land lying in the parish of St. Michaels, on condition that his son should pay his mother £8 a year for the remainder of her life.
