indicated by the Herts St. Advertiser in 1865 when reporting upon the changes to be made to St. Michaels Church: "the cosy old pews have been ruthlessly destroyed, to be replaced by the modern open seats. alike for all whether rich or poor. The three great family pews with their comfortable fireplaces and fireirons (in one of which tradition relates that an old squire in former times used to give the fire a vigorous stir when anything said in the course of a sermon happened to displease him) will no longer bring a smile on the face of a visitor". Other families also detailed in the Debenham papers are the Kentishes already mentioned, and the Jenkyns of Harpenden who were involved with the Marshalswick Thrales. The important will of John Thrale of Cell Barnes who died in 1736 is also included as he mentions Ann Smith, the significance of this already being explained. Also at the Muniment Room with Gorhambury papers there is a most interesting political note concerning the Civil War. In 1661 the Mayor stated "that he had not put a sword on for twenty years, but would do so against the King". Others, such as Mr. Lomax, "always accounted a friend and assistant to the phanatical party" took the same side. Such was political life in St. Michaels. The digression upon St. Albans politics, caused by Henry Thrale's possible participation, having now terminated, it would be well to resume the chronicle of the family living at Streatham. Boswell tells us much of the Streatham family. He tells us that Henry Thrale knew the value of his business: Henry declared that he would not quit it for an annuity of £10,000 a year. "Not" said he, "that I would get 10,000 a year for it as it is an estate to the family". Boswell reported Johnson's opinion that it was a great mistake to suppose that Hester was above Henry in literary attainments. She was more flippant, but he had ten times her learning; he was a regular scholar: her learning was that of a schoolboy in one of the lower forms. Such opinion seems harsh for poor Hester, and one only has to think of her Thraliana, of her papers in the Rylands Museum, of her Anecdotes as Mrs. Piozzi and of her many many letters left to us to wonder about the veracity of that opinion. Boswell also reported that Mr. Thrale was tall, well proportioned and stately. Mrs. Thrale was short, plump and brisk. Although not entering the arena of St. Albans politics, Thrale was very much involved in affairs concerning Southwark. He wrote a pamphlet called "The Patriot" addressed to his electors, one part of it justifying the attempt to reduce the fellow subjects in America to unconditional surrender. His several pamphlets were written with the help of Johnson.
