Herriots does not mention the best, now the second best; the house called Goldsmiths was left to Mr. Thomas Thrale's wife, and her sister and after she died it come to Mr. Richard Thrale whom old John Thrale has left exor. I have been with him and told him the orders I had from you and have set a mark upon the best horse and not to be moved until I hear fron you'. The story continued on the 25th May: 'I see that I made a mistake concerning the Herriots old Mr. Thrale left to his two sons which is Richard and William'. From this first hand evidence, it can be seen how thoroughly Duchess Sarah was managing her estates, making sure the heriot was settled. It is also interesting to note that the Sandridge Street property which Richard inherited from his mother was called 'Goldsmiths', named after his maternal grandfather. On the 17th October Feeling continued the story: 'I hope in a little time to send you the whole of Thrales concern. Reynolds has now on the land late Thrale's 200 sheep and I hope will go on very well, but he is threatened trouble by Ralph Thrale for carrying the straw to Wheelers for the thatching'. And one final note on the 2nd November: 'I have delivered the letter to Ralph Thrale and he is still desiring to feed the straw in Marshalswick Yard, but there is so much rubbish in the yard'. The reports then cease: not beyond the realms of reality to think of Mr. Feeling as having been dismissed for lack of severity and determination according to Sarah's unrelenting standards. Thus really terminates the tale of Thomas of Sandridge Street but it is worth recording the state of the Sandridge parish registers at this time. The only baptismal entry for the five sons of Richard is Ralph Thrale who went to Offley. This is because when Steele visited Sandridge in 1715, he remembers that baptisms were missing from 1618 to 1653 and 1666 to 1684 15) In spite of this however the date of birth of Thomas in 1666 is known for the Chancery proceedings already mentioned concerning the No Mans Land family include a reference to a deponent Thomas Thrale of St. Peters, Herts, yeoman, aged 59.' It has been learnt therefore how Thomas's son Richard of Childwickbury came to Sandridge Street, both to the Farm and to Goldsmiths. Even the length of Richard's stay at Childwickbury in known. In 1755 Richard replied to a complaint by Caleb Lomax concerning the tithe of Kingsbury and Childwickbury Farms at St. Michaels. Richard agreed that Lomax was entitled to a third of the corn tithe of these two farms which he, Richard, had occupied from 1735 to 1753, but had always thought that the farm was free of tithe as none had been demanded.
