  The whole estate was valued at £500-£600, although John Thrale considered that wood cut from one acre should be included, and also three horses and two cows had been omitted since they had been taken as a heriot (a sort of death duty payable to the Lord of the Manor) for No Mans Land and Leavesden. John also knew that Ralph Thrale had been indebted to Mrs. Ann Thrale by bond for £100, and to Mrs. Knowlton for £50.

• Note: 1717; In 1717 John Smith of Abbots Langley complained that he had leased a house to Ralph Ewer in 1696. He had paid Ewer £10 and a bond for a further £10 to obtain permission from the Lord of the Manor to make the transfer, but the lease had not been conveyed and a few months later Ralph Ewer 'made away with himself'. Ewer left his property to Ralph Thrale, infant son of Ralph Thrale of Sandridge, who had since died. In 1710 Smith desired to discharge the bond and asked Ralph to produce it. Ralph said he had mislaid it, but promised to find it and on this promise Smith paid Ralph Thrale £10. Two years later Thrale, then of age, suggested to Smith that the latter should pay £27 a year for the premises and tithes, and he himself would do all necessary repairs, give a new 21 year lease, cancelling the old lease, and all differences would be settled. Smith employed a carpenter to do £9 worth of work, but Thrale repudiated the agreement saying that it had not been put into writing, and that he would not accept the £9 being deducted from the £27 rent.^{Chancery Proceedings C11/1796/1} The argument went on to one point where Smith was arrested and the case was tried at Hertford Assizes, but was discharged because Thrale could not produce a Promissory Note. How the wrangle settled itself is not known, but Smith was in fact imprisoned for eight months.^{Chancery Proceedings C11/1181/37}

  Each year on Lady Day the vestry meeting appointed a guardian of the poor, two churchwardens, a number of overseers and two stonewardens, who were responsible for maintaining the fifteen miles of roads in the parish. The title stonewarden first appears in 1832, thirteen years after John Macadam had invented a new way of making roads with stones. Formerly the same officers were called surveyors of the highways. In 1846 the stonewardens were George Young of Nashs Farm and Ralph Thrale of No Mans Land, each taking an area. Mr. Young employed three roadmen. Certain work was paid for at piece rates, the price being sevenpence a yard for stone breaking, and sixpence a yard for digging gravel; Mr. Thrale employed a different gang at similar rates. When Lady Day came round again Mr. Young produced to the vestry his account for £52 and Mr. Thrale’s was for £33.

Ralph Thrale left a family bible in which he wrote simple stanza's including:

Buried:
The villagers gave him a wonderful burial. The family brick vault was opened, but William Archer the sexton only received four shillings for taking out the earth and clearing it away. The coffin was covered by the best pall. William Paul was the undertaker. The main items of the bill were the coffin, costing seven guineas, and the hire of hearse and coach, five pounds ten shillings. Among other items, Mr. Paul provided nineteen pairs of gloves varying in price from half-a-crown to one shilling a pair, and twenty black armbands. The entire bill came to £24, which in those days would have kept a labourer's family for seven months.
