    Died:
Whilst at Oxford, Thomas Salusbury, Catherine's eldest son, became a member of the Babington circle. He became a Roman Catholic, yet was an esquire to the body of the queen. Using his position in the royal household he volunteered to kill her (if necessary, kill her whilst at her devotions - an echo of 'Hamlet'). He was uncovered and put to death by being hanged, drawn and quartered.

    Notes:

The Salusbury family were at a low ebb. This disgrace brought about a separation between John and Ursula, which I believe is described in the highly allusive 'Love's Martyr' by Robert Chester, a retainer in the Salusbury household, and in Shakespeare's poem 'The Phoenix and the Turtle' which I believe was written during this period.

However, love triumphed over circumstances, and the two (the faithful turtle-dove, John Salusbury and Ursula, the colourful and high-born phoenix) were married to great ceremony (a masque being specially written for the occasion) at Lleweni, Denbigh, in December 1586.

John married Ursula Stanley in Dec 1586 in Church of Corpus Christi, Tremeirchion, Flintshire, Wales. Ursula (daughter of Earl Of Derby) and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
